The Uniform: Simpler than you think

Uniforms have been an important part of Scouting since its beginnings — for both Scouts and adult volunteers. While their design has evolved over the decades, their purpose has remained the same: to represent equality, to communicate individual accomplishments, and to remind the wearer and others of his or her commitment to the ideals of Scouting.

Scout uniforms and insignia can appear daunting at first glance, but they’re simpler than they look. The knowledgeable staff of Minnesota’s Scout Shops are always happy to help you figure out exactly what you need, but here’s a quick overview.

Cub Scouts

The Cub Scout uniform consists of a blue uniform shirt — either short-sleeve or long-sleeve — and blue uniform bottoms. Bottoms may be either convertible pants or shorts. Cub Scouts also wear a cap and neckerchief in a color corresponding to their rank, a special belt, and several badges.

Webelos

Webelos can choose either a blue uniform based on the Cub Scout uniform or a tan and olive uniform similar to the Scout BSA uniform. Shirts may be short-sleeve or long-sleeve; bottoms may be convertible pants or shorts. Webelos and Arrows of Light also wear special plaid neckerchiefs, web belts, several badges, and may wear a cap.

Scouts BSA

The Scout BSA uniform consists of a tan long-sleeve or short-sleeve shirt, olive convertible pants or shorts, neckerchief, web belt, and forest green cap. Several insignia are also required.
